Fleetwood postpone games with Ipswich and Sunderland ahead of Portsmouth clash

Fleetwood have become the latest League One club to postpone fixtures due to a coronavirus outbreak in their camp.

The Cod Army have suspended games against Ipswich (Monday, January 4) and Sunderland (Saturday, January 9) before they host Pompey on Saturday, January 16.

Several unnamed players have contracted Covid-19, meaning players and backroom staff must now go into self-isolation as per government guidelines.

Clubs in the third tier continue to be hit by coronavirus cases, with Shrewsbury cancelling their clash against Crewe on Saturday,

A Fleetwood statement said: ‘Fleetwood Town’s next two Sky Bet League One fixtures, against Ipswich Town (Monday 4 January) and Sunderland (Saturday 9 January) have been suspended.

‘The club has advised the EFL that it is unable to fulfil the fixtures following several positive COVID-19 tests and the requirement for players and staff to self-isolate as per EFL and government guidance in order to mitigate against the risk of further infection.

‘The circumstances surrounding the postponement will now be the subject of an investigation in accordance with EFL Regulations.

‘Revised dates for the rearranged fixtures will be confirmed in due course.’

Pompey are due to face Accrington this Saturday but it could be postponed.

Stanley’s Wham Stadium pitch will undergo an inspection tomorrow afternoon.
