The “highest ever recorded tide” was recording in Portsmouth last night as the surrounding area was hit by flooding.

Flood warnings were issued by the Environment Agency for Gosport, Langstone, Emsworth, Old Portsmouth, Portchester, and Hayling Island. Photos seen by The News show flooding in Old Portsmouth in the early hours of today.

A statement on the flood alert service website said the tide around Old Portsmouth was the “highest ever recorded”, with property flooding and road closures expected.

BBC Weather said the conditions will be “very windy” and colder in places. “It will be cloudy with mostly patchy light rain,” the forecaster added, “It will turn dry and largely clear by the evening.” The website said conditions tonight will be “dry and largely clear”. “During the early hours, patchy cloud will move in from the southwest. Patchy hill fog can also develop in places.”

A family from Portchester were forced to evacuate their address after waking up to rising water.

Cat Heggarty said her home in Hamilton Road was “completely ruined”, with carpets sodden and lino perished.

Lifeboat crews deployed to find missing person

Lifeboat personnel were deployed to find missing person amid high tides last night.

They were diverted by Solent Coastguard during a training session.

Lifeboat crews called to stranded car

Lifeboat personnel were called to deal with a stranded car, with a person believed to have been trapped inside.

The crew were deployed at 11.51pm amid extremely high tides and strong winds. The vehicle was seen in Portsmouth Harbour.

Hampshire police were at the scene. A statement on the Portsmouth Lifeboat Station Facebook page said: “In challenging force seven winds, the crew launched into the flood waters and made steady progress into Portsmouth Harbour.

“On arrival at the scene it was established there was no one in the car and our crew were asked to stand by as safety cover while the Coastguard Rescue Teams entered the water to established contact and tie lines to the car from the shore.” Lifeboat crews returned to the station at 1.15am.
