NOSTALGIA: Do you know the history of the Stacey Centre?Â
Martine Hebblethwaite has asked me to mention the centre as she believes that it celebrates its half century soon, but she's not entirely sure.Â
Planning permission was granted in 1965 and it is shown as an entry in the 1968 phone book under clubs and societies as The Stacey YWCA Club.

An article from 1979Â suggests the centre was 12 years old and by then it was the YMCA Stacey Club.
We believe it was originally set up as a women's refuge, which would link in beautifully with this year being the 100th anniversary of women having the vote. Martina will continue to ask the neighbours, however she is hoping to find out more information very soon as we'd like to hold a fundraising 50th birthday event.
The centre is at the heart of our community and very ably managed by Teresa Newton and a small but dedicated band of volunteers.
If you know more contact Martina on (023) 9264 7890.
