Portchester pong came from animal waste factory
It shows the workforce of the Midland Cattle Products factory at Wicor Mill, Portchester.
The site is now a small housing estate bordering Portsmouth Harbour.

Hide AdDavid says: ‘The factory, which processed animal waste from butchers’ shops and slaughterhouses, was notorious for producing unpleasant smells which became of particular concern as nearby housing developed.
‘However, for much of the last century the plant did perform a necessary service and provided local employment.
‘What a wonderful group of characters they look – not exactly dressed up for the photographer are they?!’
Seated in the centre is the manager, Mark Bott.
