Portsmouth political parties reveal alternative spending proposals
The Lib Dems proposed £177,000 be spent on better disability access in facilities; including at Alderman Lacey Library, Beddow Library, Southsea Library, Kingston Cemetery, Baffins Community Centre, Milton Cemetery and Bransbury Park. Another £300,000 would have been set aside for the ‘A City to Share’ vision for Portsmouth to become the cycling city of the UK. Both the Lib Dems and Labour proposed a 20 per cent reduction in councillors’ allowances, which would have saved £120,800, the axing of the council leader’s project manager post and the loss of a role in the strategy unit.
Labour also called for the cabinet to shrink from eight to six members, and said it would have given children’s centres £257,300 for better activities.
All the proposals were voted down.
