A rescue operation in the darkness was launched to save a woman in the sea at Southsea Beach yesterday evening.

Police and the Coastguard attended the scene near South Parade Pier, opposite Canoe Lake, just after 6pm following reports a woman had gone into the sea.

The woman was located safely following the concern for welfare report. A Hampshire police spokeswoman said: “We were called at 6.07pm yesterday to a report of a concern for the welfare of a woman on Southsea Beach. Officers attended the scene and spoke with the woman. No injuries were reported.”
