PRINCE Philip has been described as having ‘devotion to duty’ and a ‘down-to-earth persona’ by the Bishop of Portsmouth.

The Diocese of Portsmouth joined the country in paying tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh, who died on Friday morning aged 99.

The church has called for people to celebrate his life amid the sense of loss.

‘Today we join with the whole nation and friends across the world in expressing our sorrow at the death of His Royal Highness Prince Philip,’ a statement from the Diocese said.

‘Amidst the pain and grief we also lift prayers of thanksgiving for his life, service and example to our nation and to the world.’

The Rt Rev Christopher Foster, Bishop of Portsmouth, added: ‘The Duke of Edinburgh has lived as an exemplar of public service and devotion to duty.

‘His commitment to the Queen and to the nation has been steadfast and his down-to-earth persona has been coupled with deep loyalty and service.
