Fareham teacher starts online baking masterclass for students

Rob Baker, 32 from Fareham, is a teacher at Cowplain Infant School, near Waterlooville.
With schools closed due to the coronavirus outbreak, Mr Baker wanted to give his pupils a fun way of learning.

Hide AdUsing his passion for baking, he’s created a kitchen masterclass on YouTube, incorporating some of the subjects studied by his Year 2 pupils.
He said: ‘I’m really keen on sharing my love of baking with the children – I have fond memories of baking with my grandmother and aunt as a child.
‘But now many people haven’t had the same experience and the skills aren't always there anymore.
‘Making stuff from home, especially given the current state of the country, is a great way to stay indoors and learn something new.’

Hide AdFor his first YouTube video, Mr Baker took his pupils through making vanilla cupcakes – one of his personal favourite recipes.
While he wants to make his learning ‘fun’, he’s also keen to make sure the students are staying on track academically.
He said: ‘There’s still elements of this that incorporate school subjects.
‘You have the maths from the measurements, and I’ll be getting them to write about what they’ve made as well.

Hide Ad‘But at the same time, I want the children and their parents to have fun together while they’re at home.’
Mr Baker joined Cowplain Infant School at the start of the academic year.
In the past, he has taught at Victory Primary School in Paulsgrove.
As his educational YouTube series begins to take off, he hopes that more people will consider learning a new skill during to coronavirus lockdown.

Hide AdHe said: ‘Programmes like Great British Bake Off have encouraged more people to pick up baking, but now is absolutely the best time to learn something new.
‘It’s my biggest hobby but easily something that can translate to the classroom – I look forward to seeing all the results from pupils.’
