United out-musseled by Shoreham in Vase

Hayling United 1 Shoreham 3 FA Vase First Qualifying Round HAYLING were out-muscled by Sussex side Shoreham, who booked their passage into the Second Qualifying Round of the FA Vase with a 3-1 win at The College Ground, on Saturday.

The first-half was largely an ill-tempered affair as the hosts tried to unsettle the Mussels by getting in their faces as the game started at a quick tempo.

Shoreham's Graham Martins sent the first chance dipping over the bar and the away team grew in confidence as the half wore on.

With 18 minutes gone, a decent cross found the impressive Liam O'Brien whose header came back off the bar only for the Humbugs defence to scramble the ball away.

Just after the half-hour mark Dan Taylor's free-kick found Dean Smith whose header was comfortably saved by the United keeper.

Ronan Callaghan in the Shoreham goal was largely untroubled before the break – only being called into serious action once - as the West Sussex League side's defence held firm.

The visitors came out determined to stamp their authority on the game by breaking the deadlock and after just four minutes, Grant Philpott's free-kick was headed on by O'Brien giving Ryan Bradley a simple header to put his team in front.

Lee Paul's side were stung into action after going behind and a corner saw a United effort come back off the bar.

But Shoreham were not content to sit on their lead and their lively attack threatened again as a dangerous through ball by Justin Gregory was met by Bradley at the far post but his far post header went just wide.

O'Brien made it 2-0 just a minute later as the big striker burst through the United defence and slipped the ball past a stranded Humbugs keeper.

Shoreham forced a string of corners with Phillpott's delivery putting United's defence under more pressure.

In the 71st minute, O'Brien waltzed through the Hayling defence before setting up Bradley for his second to put the tie beyond doubt.

A couple of minutes later the rampaging O'Brien saw his header come off the bar as the Mussels threatened to run riot.

Hayling did pull a goal back in the 89th minute but it was all a bit too little too late

Callaghan did make one fine save at the end but that was it as far as what Hayling had to offer as their defence failed to cope with O'Brien who dominated in the air and on the deck.
