Tambling takes over as men's captain

ERNIE Tambling became Hayling Golf Club president at the AGM held on April 17.

Keith Clinnick became club captain and Paul Wiltshire his vice-captain.

Keith held the traditional captain's drive-in the next day, but did it with a difference.

Ten club personalities joined Keith in trying to get closest to the pin on the first tee.

The Spring Closed Meeting on April 22 produced some amazing results. Division One was won by Anne Aylward with a 72, and Division Two was won by Alison Holland with the superb 67!

Anne also won the Sharp Trophy for lowest gross, and Alison won the Vera Williams Bowl for best nett bronze.

There have been some terrific handicap reductions over the last month. Alison Holland has reduced her handicap by nine from 35 to 26, while Sandy Meyers has reduced hers by five from 29 to 24. .

The Ladies' Open held on Election Day, May 6, had 54 entrants, and was won by Jenny Murray and Doreen Atkinson, from Laleham in Surrey, with 41pts.

Second place went to Kathy Donohoe and Sang Porter, from Chichester, with 40 pts.

The 2010 Hayling Trophy competition is now in its final stages.

The a round-robin matchplay tournament for higher handicappers (25-36) and there were 18 south Hampshire clubs participating this year.

The final of this very successful competition - which was devised by Hayling's current lady president Helen Rees - will take place on June 17 at Hayling.

The two semi-finals at the beginning of June were between Romsey and Waterlooville, and Liphook and Meon Valley Golf and Country Club.

Thanks go to team captain Claire Kane, whose boundless enthusiasm helped Hayling to a very creditable four wins and two losses during the campaign.

The second Midsummer pro-am taking place at Hayling on Friday, June 18.

A large field of 50 teams is anticipated, making full use of the long daylight hours. Application forms can be found at www.haylinggolf.co.uk

The club has an active beginners' section of ladies, and their season kicks-off now with lessons from Hayling's two professionals, with support being offered by lady mentors.

Two more have joined the group recently. If any other ladies would like to learn more about the programme for beginners, call the office on 9246 4446.

The ladies send their congratulations to Jamie Mist, who has become the Hampshire Under 16s captain..
