Tambling defies mystery illness to star

YOUNG Rob Tambling led a terrific Hayling United fightback in a 3-3 draw at Alton after convincing his manager to allow him to play.

Tambling collapsed unconscious on the pitch at Winchester City at the weekend and was taken off on a stretcher to hospital.

After tests, the 18-year-old – whose great uncle is former Chelsea legend and England international striker Bobby Tambling - was given the all-clear and allowed to go home.

The Humbugs trailed 3-0 early in the second half before picking up the tempo to snatch an unlikely first point of the season.

Pete Murphy got them back into the game, before great work by Josh Warren set up Tambling for his first goal.

Eight minutes from time, Tambling picked the ball up 30 yards out, beat two defenders and fired an unstoppable shot into the top corner from the edge of the area.

"Rob was marvellous and scored two goals," said Hayling manager Lee Paul.

"It is great to pick up our first point and it will give us more confidence ahead of our FA Vase match at the weekend."

It is not the first time the young striker has been taken ill during a match.

He was initially believed to have suffered a heart attack when he dropped to the ground in injury time during Gosport Borough FC's game at AFC Totton, back in February.

He underwent a series of hospital tests before being given the all-clear to resume playing.

The 2-1 at defeat against high-flying Winchester was Paul's third defeat on the spin in the Wessex League Premier Division since taking over the reigns from Mark Poulton, during the summer.

He must only hope that he does not have to wait as long as his predecessor for a first win - United went more than a dozen games without a win under Poulton when he took charge halfway through the 2008/9 season after Matt Parr quit at the The College Ground.
