Spofforth strikes gold

Gemma Spofforth stormed to 100m backstroke gold at the European Championships in Budapest.

The former Portsmouth High School pupil gained revenge over Brit team-mate Lizzie Simmonds - who pipped her in the 200m backstroke earlier this week - to claim victory with a time of 59.80sec.

Spofforth, the world 100m backstroke champion and world record holder, was pleased not to miss out on the top prize second time around.

She said: 'I think the last 10m wasn't quite as strong as it normally is because I put in more speed at the beginning.

'It was a hard race but it's good to come out the best. I would have preferred two golds but you've got to share them.'
