Poulton's fury at Paxton injury

HAYLING United manager Mark Poulton was left fuming after star striker Nathan Paxton was "stamped on" forcing the teenager out of the midweek clash with Poole Town, at the College Ground.

The Wessex League Premier Division champions ran out eventual 5-2 winners, but the Humbugs boss was incensed by the second-half challenge which forced the 16-year-old to hobble off 10 minutes before the break, on Tuesday night.

Poulton stormed: "The game changed when their defender stamped on Nathan and forced him off.

"It happened right in front of the referee but he did nothing."

Paxton had run the visitors ragged in the early exchanges, and given the hosts an unlikely lead.

And the Humbug fans, who have seen virtually no football at The College Ground since the middle of December, were in dreamland when Lenny Burney put United 2-0 up.

However the injury to the striker, who has been monitored by Southampton since breaking into the side at the start of the season, disrupted the home side's momentum.

Poole, who have only lost three times all season, pulled a goal back after Paxton's substitution, and were level and quickly made it 2-2 before the end of the half.

After the break the Dorset side ran in three more goals as their greater experience and strength told.

Victory left Poole three points behind Bemerton Heath but with three games in hand an on course to win the league title for a second-year running.

Defeat left Hayling in 18th place, five points ahead of the third from bottom side, New Milton Town, who drew with the Humbugs, on Saturday.
