Hayling Ladies pair win Hampshire Foursomes

TWO of Hayling Ladies' Golf Club star players - Rosemary Grindle and Angie Stiles - have won the Hampshire County Ladies Golf Association's prestigious Centenary Foursomes.

Rosemary and Angie played superb foursomes golf to take the trophy with 42 points – an excellent score made all the more exciting by the fact they only received 14 strokes over the 18 holes.

The final - featuring 46 clubs from across the county and Channel Islands – was held at Petersfield, on August 16.

There was more success at county level for Ann Hobbs, who won the Bronze Division One prize with her nett 71 at the recent Hampshire Ladies Amateur Championships at Bramshaw.

Lady captain Marie McCanna hosted the Ladies' Invitation on August 5, when 68 ladies enjoyed golf on a wonderful sunny and warm day.

First prize was taken by Alison Holland and her guest Debbie Tappley, with Penny Wilkins and guest Margaret Major in second.

Maggie Ellis and her guest Sylvia Douglas were third.

Lots of competitive advantage was being sought when the Veterans and the Ladies competed for the Everest Trophy (for the winners) and the Wooden Spoon (for the losers), on August 10.

The ladies always try oh so hard to win, but the Vets triumphed again – they usually do – and the ladies had to settle for the consolation prize.

Grannies have a chance to compete for their own trophy in August, and this year's winner, with a handicap-reducing score of 70, was Marie Broad.

We were thrilled to win first prize in the Organisation section of the Hayling Island Scarecrow Festival with Ms Scare Crow – Keen Golfer (see page eight). It was designed and built by Ann Bailey.
