Golfers raise £700 at Multiple Sclerosis day
HAYLING Golf Club member and MS sufferer John Cowell devised a competition to celebrate the millennium back in 2000 that would also raise funds for the Solent Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre, in North End.
The centre offers four therapies for MS sufferers –hyperbaric oxygen therapy, physiotherapy, reflexology, and osteopathy.
The therapies offered have been specifically chosen to ease the symptoms of MS, and to help people cope better with their daily lives.
The centre is totally self-funding, and aside from the two permanent staff, is run with the help of volunteers.
The Millennium Salver has a unique format .- 20 holes are in play, and there are 20 teams of five players in a shotgun start, resulting in 2000 holes being played!
John drives round the course every year, dispensing essentials from Happy New Year wishes to chocolates while thanking everyone for their support.
This year's competition on January 2, was a celebration of the 11th anniversary of the special Salver.
A bitterly cold but bright morning saw100 golfers stamping their feet on the 20 tees.
A heavy frost on the course had meant a 30-minute delay, but by 9.15 the sun had started to thaw out both the players and the fairways.
The claxon sounded and they all teed off. Congratulations to this year's winners - Ian Walton, Andrew Brown, Norman Vaughan, Scott Seymour and Peter Murphy.
More than 700 was raised for the Solent Centre after a raffle and donations were added.
