Edwards and Stubbs win ladies doubles

WIMBLEDON had nothing over Seacourt in the first weekend of July, where all Seacourts doubles players turned out to challenge for the title.

The ladies event was hotly contested by three of the club's top doubles pairs and Louise Green and Caroline MacDowell put up a tremendous two-hour battle against Sue Edwards and Janet Stubbs.

But eventually Sue and Janet fought through to the final to set up a meeting with the title holders, Bev Dodgson and Sharon Davies.

The match started as it meant to go on, fast, aggressive and ferocious tennis.

Janet – back from injury – was at her best and complemented Sue's power shots with devastating net play.

But Bev and Sharon counter-punched and fought hard for every point although they couldn't find an answer to turn the match, and Sue and Janet went onto win the doubles 6-2 6-3.

The defending men's champions, Mark Dipple and Andy Mulreany, reached the final with a fine win over Paul and Tom Weaver (6-1 6-3)

The second semi was eagerly-awaited by the Seacourt faithful, who were expecting a huge match between Hugh Latham and Alan Fine who were playing James Law and Joe Dodgson.

The match was swinging in James' and Joe's favour when disaster struck and Hugh had to retire due to a calf injury.

The final was superb with all four on top of their game but James and Joe managed to break Mark's serve late in both sets to win the final 7-5, 7-5.

The men's plate final was an epic encounter between Paul McTigue and Rob Stokes and Kevin Jacobs and Pete Robertson.

Pete and kev got off to a cracking start catching Paul and Rob on the back foot and stole the first set.

Paul and Rob raised their game to level the match and the third set swung to and fro until Rob and Paul found the winning shots to win the title.
