Dinksy sm-Ash-es tope record

DINKSY ASH has been celebrating a record-breaking catch with this enormous tope.

The Portsmouth landlord was on a trip aboard Dave Chapman's Langstone charter boat Starfish when he reeled in this beauty,

Fishing off a mark by the Nab Tower, Ash landed the 84lb female tope - which is related to the shark family.

The catch beat the existing record of 82lb 8ozs.

However, to claim the record the fish had to be brought back to shore and weighed.

Ash wasn't prepared to do this, though, forfeiting the glory to return his catch to the sea unharmed.

"On one of the skipper's top-secret spots I was fishing all day and only caught one mackerel," said the delighted angler.

"We had an hour left to fish when my rod had a bite.

"It took 20 minutes to land and when weighed it was an 84lb female tope – the record is 82lb 8oz.

"I put her back in unharmed and she swam away safely."

The record-beater took a fresh mackerel fillet as bait while Ash's 10-year-old son Dexter was shown the photographic evidence to prove how it wasn't just another fishy tale.

Have you had a big catch either fishing from the shores around Hayling and Langstone or out in the boat – either your own or fishing with one of charter skippers?
