HAYLING United face a massive fixture pile-up with no immediate end in sight to the winter freeze that has claimed three fixtures since Christmas on top of the two games lost before the festive period.
Manager Mark Poulton believes his side need a miracle even if the forecasted further snowfalls in the next 48 hours fail to materialise.

Last week's Wessex League Premier Division clash against Brading Town was already severely in doubt before the
20cms of snow that fell in the early part of last Tuesday evening, which brought large parts of Hampshire to a grinding halt.

There was no prospect of playing the home match against Christchurch at the College Ground four days later with the match called off during the day on Friday.

Even before the heaviest snowfalls in some 40 years, Poulton was already moaning that the pitch was in an "awful state."

United had already rearranged the derby clash with Moneyfields set on January 26 with the trip to Wimborne – where the Dorset club failed to call off the game until United arrived despite a frozen pitch – is provisionally lined up for next Tuesday.

Tomorrow night's trip to Alresford is already another victim of the big freeze. The original fixture was called off before Christmas because of a waterlogged pitch.

Hayling's next scheduled match is a home game against Cowes Sports on Saturday, January 16 – if the club can clear the pitch of snow, as well as the ice and several large pools of water that covered it before the freeze.

Poulton fears on top of the fixture congestion there is a real threat to players picking up injuries – with a lack of match fitness increasing the risk of muscle injuries in the coming weeks.

Last season the club endured a nightmare slide down the table as a small squad failed to record a single win in the league after Poulton took over in mid-February when Matt Parr quit to join Fareham.

Poulton said: "The biggest problem is now fitness because we haven't played over the Christmas holiday period.

"The good thing is that clubs around us have not made up any ground when they have played over the holiday.

"We still have four or five games in hand on the clubs ahead of us."

Midfielder George Way has been the hardest hit by the loss of games over the Christmas period.

Last Tuesday's game against Brading was meant to be the last of a four-game ban, but he is set to sit out what little action there could be for the rest of January.

Midfielder Josh Case is available again after a trip to New York while goalkeeper Tony Harrop has finally recovered from a nasty injury picked up in the autumn which forced the Humbugs boss to sign Isle of Wight-based keeper Tony Wakeford as cover.

And a further blow for United sees Gavin Keogh out for the rest of the season after being told he needs a hip operation.

Poulton said: "I am gutted for the lad because he is a terrific player to have at your club.

"He is very popular and there is a chance he might not play again which will be a big loss to local football."
