Petersfield came out on top for the first time when Hayling Ladies Golf Club held their 24th Centenary Salver on September 4.

Some 128 golfers from 32 different clubs entered the event which was a huge success.

A lady from the host club accompanied each of the 16 groups in the morning as ball spotters and the club had 24 volunteers helping with the admin, refreshments and course marshalling.

Hayling's quartet of Carolyn Purssell, Sally Burbridge, Shirley Stanton and Maria Stokes went to Corhampton for their Centenary on September 9 and came fourth with only three points dividing first from fifth.

Maria McCanna and Barbara Osborn charged through to the quarter-finals of the Knight Cup, the County's foursomes competition, only to be beaten by Alresford, who made it through to the finals where they lost to Portsmouth.

Hayling's Am/Am was won by Marie McCanna with her three guests - Phillipa (who parred the course off a handicap of five) Sarah and Cindy.

Rhoda Atherton, Moira Hoath, Bev Blair and their guest Myra were second with 76 points and Maria Stokes and Gloria Jones playing with guests Eva and Kim were third with 74 points on countback from Maggie Ellis and her guests Anita, Sylvia and Tina.

Maggie also provided the Pimms served at the 13th along with homemade cakes for everyone.

HLGC held a coffee morning on October 7 which was probably one of the worst days for weather this year.

It poured and not many visitors played. However, that meant that more people came into the club, where we had many stalls selling cakes, plants, bric-a-brac, golf gear, books, clothes, a wine raffle and a picture raffle.

More than £600 was raised for the lady captain's charity - Alzheimer's research.

The Ladies Excuse Me was also a great success on a lovely day and won by Mike Kirby and Heather Vargas.

Rosemary Grindle won the Silver Division Salver on September 17 with a shot that hit the top of the pin and somehow dropped into the hole!

And Carol Bates has had her handicap reduced by three points in one game.
