THE culmination of the Hayling Island Dart League 2007/08 season was a finals and presentation evening at the Royal British Legion.
The finals of the individual and pairs competitions were held and trophies were presented to all the seasons' winners. Entertainment was supplied by DL Mike Jay and all who attended had an enjoyable evening.
In the finals, Ian Eames (West Town B)
beat Rick Tenderowicz (Lifeboat A) in the Men's Singles while Jane Vaile (Lifeboat Ladies) beat Debbie Macey (West Town C) were crowned Ladies Pairs champions after beating Kim Eneas and Sally Morris (Maypole A).
The Mixed Pairs title was claimed by Val Weatherley and John Buck (Maypole B) when they defeated Zoe Sumner and Rick Tenderowicz (Lifeboat Ladies and Lifeboat A).
Malcolm Eneas of the Maypole A won the Captains Cup after beating Max Harding of the Caribou Blues.
The West Town B comprehensively won the A Division for the third successive season, with the Lifeboat A as runners up.
The winners of the B Division were the Maypole B, who fought off the Lifeboat B, who finished second. Maypole A and Caribou Inn were the teams that held the rest up in each division respectively and were presented with Wooden Spoons for their efforts.
The teams who scored the most tons (scores of 100-plus) during the season were West Town B with 274 in the A Division and Maypole B in the B Division with 120 tons.
Individually, the most tons in each Division were scored by Steve Banham (West Town B) with 69 and John Buck (Maypole A) with 47.
The ladies trophies went to Sara Thompson (Maypole A0 with 12 in the A Division and Tracy Coyle (Lifeboat Ladies) in the B Division with 14.
Most wins during the season was achieved jointly in the A Division by Mike Hornsby and Ian Eames (both West Town B) and in the B Division by John Buck (Mayplole B), James Adams (Lifeboat B) and Dave Jackson (Royal British Legion B) who all achieved 15 wins.
The ladies with the most wins were Sara Thompson (Maypole A) in the A Division with six wins and Jane Vaile (Lifeboat Ladies) in the B Division with 14 wins each.
The highest finish in the A Division was by Ian Eames (West Town B) who finished on 160. The ladies highest finish in this Division was 80 by Sally Morris (Maypole A).
John Buck and Val Weatherley (both Maypole B) who finished on 141 and 70 respectively made the highest finishes in the B Division.
The quickest game in the A Division was 13 darts, which was achieved by Ian Eames (West Town B). The quickest in B Division was 17 darts by Fred Rockall (Maypole B).
The quickest game for the ladies was 23 darts, in the A Division by Ann Towersey (Maypole A) and 19 darts by Jane Vaile (Lifeboat Ladies) in the B Division.
There were several instances of players scoring 180 during the season.
The players who achieved this milestone in the A Division were Ian Eames (5), Mike Hornsby (3), Graham Ball (2), Steve Banham, Paul Williams, Ian Kelly, Bill Wallage, Graeme Bugg, Jamie Smith and Mick Coyle. The ladies highest score was 150 by Kim Eneas.
In the B Division John Buck, Fred Rockall, Dan Gorvin, Liam Dardis and Danny Beale scored the maximum of 180.
The ladies' highest score was 160, which was scored by Sue Martin.
The West Town B beat Elliott's Club to complete the double in the final of the Jack Geary Trophy. The Maypole B, not to be upstaged also completed the double by beating Potters B in the final of the Trophyman Shield.
The Fours Competition, which was staged at the West Town, was won by the West Town LWMP team, which consisted of Trevor Spraggs, Steve Banham, Mike Hornsby, Ian Eames and Kevin Sumner, who beat the West Town F E in the final.
The West Town F E team were Sean Hammond, John Peall, Paul Williams, Julius Newman and Mark Macey.
The Plate knockout competition which is held on the same night and competed for by the teams who are eliminated from the main competition in their first match was won the the Lifeboat Pros who were Norma Taylor, Samatha Tambling, Tracy Coyle and Liz Clifford who defeated Four Brits and a Pole (Lifeboat A) who consisted of Dave Tambling, Graeme Bugg, Martin Lansley, Len Cliftyon and Rick Tenderowicz.
Carole and Roger Young from the West Town sponsor the Fours and Plate competitions and the Hayling Island Dart League committee would like to thank them both for their continued support.
The league would also like to thank the families of Rod Sadler and Charlie Mitchell, who both sadly passed away before the start of the last season, for attending the Finals and Presentation evening and presenting the trophies named in honour of both Rod and Charlie for their outstanding contributions and sportsmanship over a long period.
The Rod Sadler Trophy – a knockout trophy for players over the age of 25 - was presented by Rod's grandson, Anthony, and widow, Pauline to Liam Dardis on behalf of Stan Brimecombe, who was unable to attend.
The Charlie Mitchell Champion of Champions Trophy - a trophy competed for by the House Champion from each team in the league - was fittingly won by Ian Eames (West Town B) who was one of Charlie's team mates.
This trophy was kindly donated by Bentley and Walker and presented by Pearl Mitchell, who was also given the honour of collecting the A Division league winner's trophy on behalf of the West Town B team.
The league's officers and committee would like to thank everyone for their support and also those teams and individuals who donated raffle prizes for the presentation evening.
They would also like to thank Lee Young of Stennings and Marshall and John Hill, of Wimpy at Beachlands, who have sponsored the league this season.
They extended their thanks to the Royal British Legion committee and staff for allowing them to use the club for the finals and presentation evening.
