FIREWATCH by STEVE ALCHIN
Hayling Island retained firefighter

IN the past month we have been called out to fires burning in the recycle bins that are located in the Health Centre car parks, behind Elm Grove, in Mengham.
One such incident happened at 2am on August 16. When Hayling crews arrived, a paper recycling bin had been set alight.

Most of these fires are being reported in the early hours of the morning so if you see anything suspicious we would appreciate t
he public to contact the police.

Also if you see any evidence of a fire or buring then call us – better to be safe then sorry.

Equally, if you have any information about such deliberate acts of criminal damage and arson, then report them to the police, on 0845 0454545 or call Crimstoppers, anonymously if you wish, on 0800 555111.

Hayling firefighters were also called out to tackle a blaze in the derelict cottages on Ferry Road, at 5.14pm, on August 5.

Accompanied by two other appliances - one from Havant and the turntable ladder from Southsea - 18 firefighters attended the incident.

The fire started in the roof which the crew had to remove a large part of, to attack the fire.

Thanks to the hard work and quick response time, they managed to stop the fire which was in danger of spreading along the roof space of the adjoining building.

Fire station open day A big thank-you to all the people that attended and helped out at our station's annual open day on August 15.

We had appliances from other stations on display and a mobile kitchen fire display warning householders about the dangers of chip pans.

Anyone who saw the flames from the burning oil when water was put on it will agree

the dramatic display highlighted the dangers of tackling fires in the kitchen.

Our advice is the "Three Outs" - Get Out, Stay Out and Call Us OUT!

There were plenty of stalls, including one selling fire engines and firemen figures, a raffle and a ballon race all raising money for the Firefighter Charity our benevolent fund.

There was also an all-day barbecue which was run by firefighters Simon Silcox and Daryl Sharp,

They did an excellent job in supplying not only the general public but also the firefighters and familys with burgers and hot dogs all day long for some six hours.

We raised £620 - an excellent acheivement. Plans are already under way to make next year's open day bigger and better. I will keep you posted nearer the time.
