So that's where money goes!

RECENT revelations about MPs' expense claims have prompted me to enquire where our council tax money goes.

Like most Hayling Island residents, I am oblivious of who dips into our public purse and who decides where our money is spent.

I have openly asked this question as Labour candidate for Hayling Island in the recent County Council elections.

To my surprise, I received a letter from our retiring Tory county councillor giving proud details to my question that was otherwise a mystery to us all.

County councillor Ted Gale informed me that 25,000 was awarded to the HIADS Theatre; 4,00 was awarded for cinema equipment, a grand piano and a new carpet for the HICC and St Andrew's Church gained new furniture and new heating.

While this is generally beneficial for anyone who attends that particular church, is a member of the HICCA, and likes amateur dramatics, which is obviously councillor Gale, it is definitely not beneficial to any other resident of Hayling Island.

What right have county councillors to spend our money on their own pet schemes without asking us first?

Like MPs' expenses, it's time this misuse of our money ceased.
