Reef would be better than breakwater

THE sandy beach could easily be bought back by positioning a barrier reef approximately half-a-mile offshore, stretching roughly from Bosmere Road to Bound Lane.

This would dissipate wave power and leave calm water inside.

This would not affect the tides, which we need to cleanse our beach, but would shelter us from southerly gales.

A small gap halfway between the barrier would be needed for emergencies.

The barrier could be built of rocks and tyres chained together, anchored by moorings in a straight line which eventually would be inhabited by shellfish, crabs, lobsters etc.

This would make a safer place for leisure users inshore, still allowing surfing at the Ferry end.

The existing stones would not need replenishing for some time and it may be possible to remove them altogether.

Although the sea level is rising, with the barrier in place the wave power would be diminished and the threat of flooding would be reduced.

In my opinion any talk of further development to the seafront is ridiculous.

Traffic on and off the Island is already a big problem and is far worse in the summer months with jams to and from Havant and the motorway.
