Why we are taking the pledge
ON THE BEAT by Sergeant STEVE PRATLEY ANOTHER year is upon us and on behalf of the team I'd like to say Happy New Year.
I am sure a number of you will have seen the TV adverts with regards to the Policing Pledge.
This year my team are working on more community engagement events which you'll see from below include more regular surgeries.
That way we can really promote everyone having a say on what matters to them, and what issues they would like to see tackled.
We are already booked in for a number of talks and events over the course of the year, so please come and speak to us if you feel you or your organisation could benefit from anything like this.
Extra Beat Surgeries
I am pleased to report that the team will be working more closely with local businesses and agency's this year on the locations of our beat surgeries in 2010.
Over the past two years we have held used the Hampshire force's mobile police station on a bi-monthly basis.
The locations have been at Beachlands and also in Mengham Road. This year we will now be holding them on a monthly basis.
This month's surgeries will be at:-
Monday, Jan 25,– Co-op in Elm Grove 2pm
Tuesday Jan 26, Sainsbury's in Mengham Road 1130am-1.30pm
Wednesday Jan 27 Beachlands Tourist Office 9.30-11.30am
We would like to encourage as many people as possible to take advantage of these surgeries - they are not just for reporting crimes.
You can also seek advice or discuss any local issues that you'd like to see tackled which can go to the next panel meeting at the Hayling Community Board.
Cycling – No Lights
I am often surprised by the number of people out and about on bikes during the hours of darkness with no lights.
I cannot emphasise enough the dangers of this and the number of people that these actions can affect.
I am sad to say that during my service I have had the unpleasant task of having to knock on relatives doors to pass on news of collisions and that loved ones have been seriously/fatally injured.
Some of these incidents I am sure could have been prevented by just being safe on a bike and using decent lights.
It is an offence to cycle during the hours of darkness without lights and a fixed penalty notice of 30 can be issued on the spot.
I am sure that you can get a decent set of lights and change from 30.
Please think about this if you do take the risk of riding without lights.
New Station Hours
I reported in December's column the change of hours that our station will be open to the public, following public consultation.
The hours started on January 4 and are now Mon-Thurs 10am-2pm and Frii 4-8pm
