West Town pub festival raises £3k
HAYLING publicans Roger and Carole Young were delighted with the success of their latest charity event, which raised more than £3,000.
Proceeds from the music festival, held at the West Town pub on August 8, will go to Hayling First Responders, the Rowans Hospice and Cancer Research UK.
This year's event was even bigger and better than previous festival, which raised 1,100 last year.
The popularity of the event was particularly gratifying for Carole, who is herself suffering from cancer.
Good weather ensured the whole programme could go ahead as planned, with an all-star line-up of local bands and musicians performing in the pub garden throughout the afternoon and early evening.
The large and enthusiastic audience appreciated the wide variety of music, from rock 'n' roll to many of the latest sounds.
Customers also bought tickets for the giant raffle and enjoyed barbecued food, a spit roast and the beer tent.
Taking part in the outdoor sessions were DNA Cowboys, Sly Hardy, Vernon's Friends, Strawberry Blonde, Underlay Underlay, Mark Handley, Planet Graffiti, The Revivals, Shep Wooley, No Idea, The Dolphins, Absolute Zero, Tobo Lumpfoot, the Rock 'n' Roll Hoodlums and Beautiful Noise.
From 9pm onwards, the festival continued inside the pub, with yet more music from Manti, and Rick and the Rivieras.
Carole said: "It all went very well indeed. The weather was fine and we were packed, all afternoon and all evening.
"We'd like to thank everyone who helped and supported us, including our customers, the Hayling businesses which contributed raffle prizes, and the musicians, who all gave their services free of charge a special thanks to Steve North and Dave Black who organised the day and kept things running outwardly smoothly.
"They were all brilliant and we are really pleased that the festival was so successful."
It was a long day for Roger and Carole, who worked non-stop from 4am until 1am on the following morning, with a lot of indispensible help from their staff, friends and family.
On August 16, there was a ceremony at the West Town, when TV presenter Fred Dinenage handed over the proceeds from the festival to charity organisers.
