We're gonna make you a Star!

HAYLING College took part in the Global Rock Challenge for the first time at Portsmouth Guildhall and took fifth place.

Their act was called Star Struck comprising eight minutes of mime and dance, telling the story of "Star" - a young girl who reaches her dream of pop stardom, only to have it threatened by drug abuse.

With the help of family, she recovers and goes on to success.

The event was designed to promote a healthy-living lifestyle, extolling the benefits of getting involved in activities like the Rock Challenge over the dangers of drugs, alcohol and smoking.

Pupils had been rehearsing every week since January, and had raised the money for our costumes ourselves.

Before their big moment, they took part in production meetings, including doing the conga around the auditorium!

Heather Saunders said: "As we performed, the other schools cheered us on, boosting our confidence and making our smiles even wider.

"None of this though, compared to the thrill of performing in costume to our parents, friend and teachers in the evening."

Fellow pupil Charlotte Seddon-Ellis revealed the tension back stage before the results were annnounced.

She told the Islander: "As we sat and waited for the results, our hearts were beating fast as all the other schools received awards.

"We started to feel dejected, but then suddenly the award for Best Stage Crew was announced.

"We were all on our feet cheering and screaming with happiness and relief.

"Then the final awards for places were announced. We were not expecting to place, but then were overwhelmed and overjoyed to receive fifth place overall.

"We cannot wait to begin preparations for next year!"

Becki Clark – the college's director of music - choreographed the show with the help of some of our year 10 dance GCSE pupils.
