THERE were some surprises in store at a marina’s open day.

Northney Marina, at the top of Hayling Island, opened its facilities to local residents and boating enthusiasts as part of the Royal Yachting Association’s Active Marina Programme.

A bomb disposal company was asked along and people were invited to take their out of date boat flares.

Dockmaster Jim Wakefield said: ‘I’m glad we did because people brought along 2,000 out of date flares. You buy new ones every year for boats and people leave the old ones in the garage.

‘Around 80 of them were so dangerously unstable they had to be exploded on the site.’
