Time to concentrate on affairs at Winchester
COUNCILLOR'S REPORT by Frank Pearce, Hayling West FIRSTLY I would like to thank those who supported me in retaining the county council seat for the Conservative Party, in June.
I always said if I won the seat I would relinquish being a ward councillor so I could concentrate on my duties at Winchester.
As one of the longest-serving ward councillors on Hayling Island I'm standing down as a councillor for Hayling West at the forthcoming spring eleciton to allow someone else the opportunity to carry on.
The candidate selected by the party to stand at the next election is Michael Wilson, a local solicitor, and ex-pupil of Hayling School - an excellent choice and I hope you will give him your full support.
One of my first aims as a ward councillor was to protect Beachlands from development and after 18 years it is pretty much the same as when I was first elected, although I am aware that pressure will always be on to build in this area.
As a county councillor, I shall continue to resist unsuitable buildings.
Visiting a display of woodwork at the Hayling College I was surprised at the high standard the students produced.
As the son of a Portsmouth dockyard shipwright foreman I really appreciated the excellent quality of the workmanship.
I'd almost forgotten what a good dovetail joint looks like.
Hayling College once again put on a superb show with their production of Oklahoma,
How did the kids acquire such good American accents without chewing gum?
My favourite being the Cowboy and the Farmer Should Be Friends, which they delivered with gusto. Having a 13-piece band added to the evening.
The crossing by the McCarthy & Stone seafront building, paid for by the developer as part of the planning application, has been completed.
There have been some complaints which the county highways department are looking into.
The borough council is developing a plan to transform the existing Civic Campus in Havant into a new Public Service Village – see the Community Board report for more details.
With the opening of the new Tesco Extra store at Solent Road, Havant, there will be opportunities for employment which could be good news for some unemployed on the Island.
There are also discussions on a new Sainsbury's at Waterlooville which could create hundreds of jobs within the borough if planning is granted.

The council will be collecting one additional black sack, to be placed by your wheeled bin, between Tuesday, December 29, and Saturday, January 9.
This is to assist with the disposal of wrapping paper and packaging during the Christmas period.
And finally on behalf of the six Hayling councillors we wish you a very Happy Christmas and propserous New Year.
