Swipe card helps raise cash for good causes

THE simple swipe of a card will help raise thousands of pounds for two good causes on Hayling Island.

Residents are rallying round to help keep their community centre open, and refurbish a school, by supporting the Co-op's Community Support Scheme.

Scores of shoppers are signing up to the card, which is swiped at the point of purchase and means a proportion of the value of shopping is donated to the community.

For every 1 spent at the Elm Grove store, three pence will be donated to the kitty.

Residents and Co-op hope to raise 25,000, which will be divided equally between Hayling Island Community Centre and Mill Rythe Infant School.

To celebrate the launch of the card, there was a fun-filled party at Hayling Park, at the end of July.

People of all ages enjoyed go-karting, indoor games, dancing and entertainment from Captain Stomp and the Roof Raisers.

A panel of Island residents decided which organisations will get the cash.

Tania Jones, manager at the community centre, was over the moon to be chosen as a beneficiary as a number of community organizations were competing for the cash.

She said: "Staff, volunteers and centre users are absolutely delighted that we have been selected as one of the organizations to be supported by the Co-op Community Support Scheme.

"The centre is a registered charity and receives no funding so it is a struggle just to break even at the end of each year.

"This news has come as a massive surprise and it is a very exciting time for us as we can now look forward to being able to update and replace some facilities and equipment that would have taken literally years of fundraising.

"We would like to say a huge thank you to Co-op for supporting the centre with this scheme and would urge shoppers to remember to swipe their new card at the tills before they leave the store."

Meanwhile, Mill Rythe Infant School, in Havant Road, will be spending the cash on refurbishing the school hall to make it more attractive for small groups to use in the evenings and at weekends.

The hall already hosts the Hayling Bridge Club two nights a week.
