ALL eyes were on Hayling Island over the weekend as some of the country’s best windsurfers gave a masterclass in the sport.

The seventh National Windsurfing Festival was held on the seafront and proved to be popular with spectators as the three-day event drew to a close yesterday.

Windsurfers made a splash with breathtaking demonstrations and by taking part in exciting races.

On Saturday, visitors were amazed by the night windsurf, which took place under floodlights.

Hayling Island councillor Leah Turner, of Havant Borough Council, said she hoped the event’s popularity would lead to an increase in trade for the local economy.

She said: ‘It gets better every year. To us Hayling Island is a big place but to have the National Windsurfing Festival here is absolutely wonderful.

‘On Saturday I had to queue to get back onto the island, which shows how popular it has been.

‘I hope our traders have been making up for it over the weekend and I am delighted we had good weather.’
