Strangers step in to help parents go to visit sick son
AN APPEAL to help the parents of a man who suffered a critical head injury in Borneo has been an ‘overwhelming’ success.
People have gone the extra mile to give aid to Jane and Johnny Dukes, who are both in their 80s and live on Hayling Island, in visiting their son Terry.
The professional diver was flown back home thanks to the Sultan of Brunei and, despite five operations, remains in a critical condition in the Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham.
When family friend Vince Faithfull, of Chichester Road, North End, discovered Mr and Mrs Dukes were having to spend three hours on six different buses to visit their son he decided to appeal for help.
And after his plea was published the The News, 10 people came forward to offer their assistance.
He said: ‘We had an amazing response from people who wanted to collect Terry’s parents and it is already under way.
‘We are organising a rota system where people can take it in turns to give them lifts to the hospital.
‘It’s been absolutely great. Jane and Johnny have thanked us a great deal, but we still need more help because we don’t know how long this will go on for. We’ve had an overwhelming response so far and anyone who wants to donate money or time would still really be appreciated.’
Vince runs A&V Trade Sales, in Victoria Road South, Southsea, and added that he intends to donate £5 from the sale of every one of his motorcycles to the Terry Dukes appeal and will be asking his customers to also give £5.
Before his accident, Terry lived in Borneo for more than 20 years and worked as a diver and marine biologist.
His cousin Carole Jahme helped arrange for his flight home when she met the Sultan’s children at a party.
Now she has joined with other family and friends to raise money for Terry’s care and treatment. To donate visit justgiving.com/carole-jahme.
