Stone the crows... it's festival time again

A COLOURFUL crop of scarecrows have sprung up as the fourth-ever Hayling Island Scarecrow Festival got underway this week.

Instead of scaring away birds from fields, the "outstanding" straw citizens are a fixture on the high street outside butchers and cake shops.

This year around 200 scarecrows have been made by residents for the annual festival, and they will be around for the next fortnight.

As usual prizes available for the best creations for the

festival which attracts hundreds of people every year.

And visitors are once again being encouraged to find the scarecrows on a trail around the Island.

Colin Telford, one of the event organisers, from Hayling Island Bookshop, in Mengham Road, said: "There's quite a lot of them out in the street in Mengham.

"There's a soldier outside the estate agents and a butcher holding a string of sausages outside the butcher's."

The event is organised by Hayling's BEST - made up of businesses and residents who aim to promote the Island.

Trail sheets are available from the bookshop, Terracotta Pot Shop at Eastoke, Relatively Crafty and Hayling Library in Mengham, Paige's Fishing Tackle, in West Town, J & K Supermarket, Stoke Fruit Farm, and the Tourist Information Centre at Beachlands
