SCORES of people ditched their normal Saturday morning gym routine to pull a tractor tyre along a beach.
The group, from Innovations Fitness in Havant, pulled tyres for a mile along Hayling Island beach this morning to raise money for Sport Relief.
Organiser George Turner said: ‘I sat there last night watching Sport Relief on the telly, trying to hold back the tears. It’s absolutely fantastic, the kindness of these people who raise money for charity every year. I thought rather than running a mile, let’s pull a tyre behind us. It’s a bit of a challenge but it can be done.’
In the group were friends Lee Johnson, 44, and Lee Magee, 44, both from Emsworth.
Mr Johnson said: ‘I’ve been training with Innovations Fitness for the last 18 months and heard about this through the instructor. It’s a great opportunity to give something back to those who are less privileged.’
Mr Magee said: ‘It’s good to get people exercising instead of sitting on their backsides on a Saturday morning.’
Last year, the group raised more than £1,400 in sponsorship and they hope to raise a similar amount once all the donations have been added up.
Activities are continuing all weekend for Sport Relief, including a Sport Relief mile at the Mountbatten Leisure Centre in Portsmouth which is being held tomorrow.
All are welcome at the event, which starts at 10am and costs £6 to enter for adults and £3 for children. All monies raised go to Comic Relief charities helping disadvantaged families in the UK and overseas.
