Olympic countdown starts at Water Festival
A FREE weekend family event filled with fun is being held at Havant's Staunton Country Park, on July 24 and 25.
The open weekend is an annual UK-wide celebration counting down to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and will also involve Guinness Hermitage Housing Association's Streetsport programme.
The event organised by the borough council will be one of hundreds taking place all over the country with countdown to the 2012 games now just two years away.
The council is working together with other agencies to deliver three events in one.
The prestigious Havant Water Festival which already commands a tremendous following, will offer more to its visitors this year.
Hayling councillor Andy Lenaghan, portfolio holder for culture and community said: "Last year the water festival drew a large audience on its own, but to link it with StreetSport activities launch and the national event to count down to the Olympics 2012 will make it even more attractive to visitors.
"By holding one event instead of three separate ones, we can share the costs across the partnership maintaining the quality and extensive activities on offer to residents for free, at a fraction of the cost in previous years."
The festival will also host street theatre, stage events, workshops, exhibitions, crafts and games as well as many types of entertainment designed to increase public awareness of water issues.
Storytelling and face painting will also add to the fun over the two days.
The council trailer will also be available for residents' to give their views on front-line services and the way the council spends taxpayers' money.
The Water Festival is run in partnership with Havant Borough Council, Hampshire County Council, Portsmouth Water Company and The Hampshire Water Partnership.
The festival is also being supported by Portsmouth City Council, the Environment Agency, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust and Ecover.
