Millions for Manor?

HAYLING ISLAND'S most exclusive address is up for sale.

Manor House, in Manor Road, is steeped in history and was once the hunting lodge of the Duke of Norfolk, the owner of the Arundel Castle estate.

The imposing five-bedroom residence has been described as the most important on the Island and is thought to be on the market for several million pounds.

The estate agent, Henry Adams, will not reveal the price tag but the former owner, William Padwick, paid 38,400 for the country house (pictured) in 1825 – the equivalent to 4million today.

Robin Walton, from Discover Hayling's Heritage Group, said: "It is the most important home on the Island – it was the home of the lord of the manor.

"The Duke of Norfolk sold the place to pay off his gambling debts and one of the conditions put on him by the new owner was that he use his influence to steer through an act of parliament to get the bridge built."

With the building of the bridge Mr Padwick wanted to exploit the Island's seaside charm and turn it into a cross between fashionable Regent's Park and Brighton.

Mr Walton added: "It was owned by the Padwick family until 1971 and it has been lovingly well looked after by the current family who live there."

The land was originally given to the French Jumiegnes monks in 1067 by William the Conqueror and the original dovecote still remains and is thought to be the oldest structure on Hayling.

Current owners Louis and Heather Galea have opened up their home to the community on a number of occasions including Discover Hayling's historical re-enactment of William Padwick's "Grand Plan," in September 2007.

The Grade II listed house stands in 4.3 acres of parkland and has an ornamental lake.
