Major flood defence work gets under way

ENOUGH shingle to fill one-and-a-half Olympic swimming pools is being deposited on the beach on Hayling Island.

Flood defence work by Havant Borough Council has begun at Eastoke.

The work is set to last another two weeks and will involve moving shingle from built-up sections to eroded areas of the beach.

As well as this, a large quantity of shingle has been imported and is being stored at Eastoke Corner car park before being deposited on the beach.

The work is being funded by a £161,000 grant from the Environment Agency.

The Eastern Coastal Partnership, which is a partnership between all the local authorities, has also secured a £1.3m grant from the agency to help improve flood protection along the rest of the Hayling promenade over the next five years.

Les Searle Plant Hire & Sales Ltd has been contracted by the council to undertake the work at Eastoke.

Cones and warning signs have been put on the beach to clearly mark where heavy machinery will be working.

The beach will remain open to the public with Havant Borough Council staff on site to manage public safety.
