Live music to mark end of Paralympics

THIS summer’s Olympic Games were given a fitting finale as towns across the region took part in the nationwide Bandstand Marathon.

Live performances were enjoyed by scores of people in Fareham, Gosport, Hayling Island and Waterlooville yesterday afternoon.

They joined 500 other bandstands across the country to form the London 2012 Bandstand Marathon.

Each bandstand featured live music from a variety of local musicians and performers, with Coldplay’s Viva La Vida being performed simultaneously across the country at 2pm.

Waterlooville featured performances from dance troupe Classique and singer James Burns.

Ray Bastin, who organised the Waterlooville event, said: ‘Everyone was really helpful to get the event going.

‘The Classique girls were marvellous.’

The day was enjoyed by Colin and Mairi Peers, from Rowlands Castle, whose granddaughter Lucy, nine, performed.

Mrs Peers said: ‘It’s quite nice to see the community spirit that has been created.’

Alison Eade, Fareham’s event planner, said: ‘It was really important that Fareham got involved in this event.’

Gosport’s Bandstand event was held at the Falkland Gardens.

Deputy Mayor John Beavis said: ‘The event was extremely well attended and a real family occasion for a final summer picnic.’
