How adiZone will look

THIS is how Hayling Island's new outdoor sports gym and recreation area will look when it is completed next month.

Havant Borough Council has secured 300,000 funding to build the adiZone by the beach at Eastoke Corner.

While it might not be on a par with California's famous landmark at Malibu where celebrities pump iron alongside perfectly toned young Americans, it will offer plenty of sporting chances for kids – and adults alike - on the Island

As well weights and cardio-vascular equipment, the adiZone will feature a climbing wall and an open area for aerobics, dance and gymnastics.

There will also be an area for tennis, football and basketball – all just a stone's thrown from the sea.

The gym, which will be free to use and open all-year round, will be up and running by the end of August this year.

The adiZone – as revealed by the Island back in January - will measure more than 6,000ft. It has been pioneered by sports firm Adidas.

One of the main aims of the scheme is getting younger people into sport, and Olympic legend Seb Coe threw his support behind the gym.

Mr Coe, chairman of London 2012 Organising Committee, said: 'It's fantastic to see Adidas expanding the adiZone programme to Hayling Island. The adiZones inspire young people to become more active.'

Up to 40 of them are set to be built across the UK in preparation for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Rosemary Satchwell, who runs The Terracota Pot Shop at Eastoke, said: "I think it will be really good for all ages to enjoy the lovely fresh air we have here.

"There are only 40 being built in the country, so we have done well to get one."

"I might use it, you never know! I know a lot of people are looking forward to using it."

Hayling East councillor Andy Lenaghan, in charge of culture at Havant Borough Council, said: "This project is the result of months of hard work behind the scenes by officers at the council to secure the funding necessary to make this happen.

"To have secured this facility for the residents of the borough is a great achievement and I am sure that the community will take advantage of it and use it all year round."

The council secured funding from developers' contributions, Hampshire County Council, the Government and sponsorship from the German sports giant.
