Hayling lad on path to a career in the navy
TRAINEE Oliver Brown
OLIVER Brown has sailed through the first phase of his officer training at the Britannia Royal Naval College.
The 21-year-old from Hayling Island has undergone 30 weeks of training in Dartmouth in his bid to become a warfare officer in the Royal Navy.
The midshipman’s training included 10 weeks at sea in the amphibious assault ship HMS Bulwark, which was operating in UK waters and the Baltic.
The time on board gave the opportunity for Oliver and his colleagues to gain experience across all specialisations and departments in the warship.
The course culminated in the passing-out parade at the college in front of the cadets’ families and friends.
The former Hayling College student, who joined the navy last year, enjoyed the course.
‘The navy has continued to be an enjoyable challenge, testing all the skills I learnt in training and opening up opportunities that I never thought I would be part of,’ he said.
Since passing-out, he has been working as deputy senior sub-lieutenant at the college and played a role in the guard at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Pageant in London.
