ATHLETES will be appearing across Hayling Island this summer – in the form of scarecrows.

To tie in with the Olympics, the island’s annual Scarecrow Festival will be taking on a sporting theme.

The award categories will cover a range of sports.

There will be awards for track and field scarecrows, as well as water-based sports such as sailing, rowing, swimming, water polo and diving.

Other categories will cover team events and individual events.

For the first time since the festival started, the winning and runner-up scarecrows in each category will this year win cash prizes of £100 for first, £75 for second and £50 for third.

The festival will take place between July 28 and August 12.

Organiser Marie Telford said: ‘This will be the sixth year that we have held the festival and we hope to attract a record entry.’ For more information visit haylingscarecrows.co.uk.
