HAYLING Island is set for a bumper line-up of events under glorious sunshine this weekend.

With temperatures set to reach as high as 22 degrees, visitors are expected to flock to the island and enjoy what it has to offer.

Some of the country’s best windsurfers will tackle the waves during the National Windsurfing Festival, which starts today and goes on until Sunday.

The Havant Borough Council-sponsored event is expected to feature blistering competitions and free-ride events for sailors who have never competed.

Sunday sees the Hayling Seaside Railway Classic Car Show return to Fundland Amusement Park next to Beachlands station.

The event will feature owners exhibiting their vintage vehicles from 10am.

And the London Olympic and Paralympic Games, which have captured the hearts of the nation, will be celebrated in style with a bandstand marathon event taking place at The Plaza in Eastoke Corner.

From 1pm to 5pm, music fans will be enthralled by local performers as they form part of a 500-strong band stand celebration nationwide.

Performers include singer Chloe Dickinson, ukelele group The Huggers, duo Alan and Avril, exciting street dance group Second to None, the One Night Stand band, and No Idea.

Mayor of Havant Gerald Shimart has the honour of opening the event and says he is looking forward to the jam-packed weekend.

He said: ‘Providing the sun’s out as it is at the moment, it is going to be a fabulous weekend.

‘It’s very exciting for the whole area, not just Hayling Island.

‘Hayling in particular will be boosted with the windsurfing event and I hope it will bring in a lot of publicity.

‘The bandstand event will bring in the crowds and it will keep the feel-good factor from the Olympics and Paralympics going.

‘I hope everyone has a great time.’

Hayling Island councillor Leah Turner, of Havant Borough Council, added: ‘Hopefully Hayling Island will be packed with people having a wonderful time this weekend.’
