Grenade theory dismissed

HAYLING historian Robin Walton has dismissed claims an unexploded grenade may have come from a special forces team.

As reported, a Second World War British grenade was discovered tangled in the roots of a tree at The Hollies caravan site, near Itchenor Road, Hayling Island.

It was taken away by the navy bomb disposal team.

Mr Walton, from heritage group Discover Hayling, said the grenade did not belong to the Combined Operations Pilotage Parties, which trained on Hayling.

The group of special forces was tasked with undercover missions to survey invasion coastlines, including the D-Day landing beaches in Normandy.

Mr Walton said: ‘They were a totally clandestine group.

‘COPPS and grenades – they don’t go together.’

Mr Walton said there were landing craft on Hayling during the war and this could account for the grenade.
