Great night of giving to good causes
MORE than £12,000 was handed over to charity at the Paris to Hayling Bike Ride's annual cheque presentation evening at Seacourt on Saturday, April 5.
All riders participating in last year's 1million ride had collected their sponsorship by this date, which is a surprising first for the bike ride, as there are usually at least a couple of very late sponsorship collectors.
the trend is now for riders to send their sponsorship directly to their favoured charity, often via the Justgiving fundraising website, rather than via the bike ride's charitable arm, known as ACE (Association for Charitable Endeavours).
In fact, of the 104,505 - including Gift Aid - recorded as having been raised from the 2007 ride, more than 60 per cent - 63,863 in total - was sent direct.
That is more than double the proportion of a few years back.
There was a good attendance from the 50 or more mainly local beneficiaries on the night, plus riders and support crew.
There was a very popular showing of councillor David Collins's video version of last year's ride, with lots of sympathy from the attendees for how we had to cope with all the rain, bringing back soggy memories for us riders!
After the presentations, there was a light buffet and the chance for the charities to "network," as well as meet riders and support.
More than 100 charities and deserving causes were nominated by riders and the organising committee.
