Full steam ahead!
THE volunteers at the Hayling Seaside Railway have been hard at work putting together their programme for 2010.
The one-mile narrow gauge light railway is operating daily for the rest of the Easter school holidays.
The railway's popular Model Railway In The Shed exhibition makes a welcome return to the Beachlands railway station, after a year's absence, on Saturday April 24.
As well as a range of fine-scale model railways and trade stands on display in the depot itself, a frequent service of narrow-gauge passenger trains and heritage demonstration goods trains, will be in operation, between Beachlands and Eastoke.
The Seaside Railway will be joining forces with Funland, and the Local Locomotion and Hayling Legends vintage car groups to produce their annual Vintage Transport Gathering at Beachlands, on Sunday, May 23.
A wide variety of vintage transport exhibits will be on public display in the Funland car park, while vintage trains will be in operation on the Seaside Railway next door.
The highlight for many of the 2010 season will be the welcome return of the Hampshire Narrow Gauge Railway Trust's veteran coal-fired steam locomotive 'Wendy,' from its usual operating base at the Amberley Chalk Pits Museum.
The classic locomotive built in 1919 by W G Bagnall, of Stafford, will be gracing the Hayling Island rails for a total of six weekends this year.
Wendy will be hauling passenger trains over the weekend of June 12 and 13, 19 and 20 and 26 and 27, and again on September 11 and 12, 18 and 19 and 25 and 26.
There will be added interest when the railway's vintage diesel locomotives, and fleet of industrial goods wagons, provide a supporting programme of light railway 'goods trains', passing the steam passenger trains at Mengham Road Halt on June 19 and 20.
The regular summer holildays schedule starts on July 3 with the daily timetable extending to September 5 – not forgetting The Carnival Belle running during Hayling Lions' annual Carnival on August 7, when trains will run into the evening.
The half-term holiday sees trains running daily from October 23-31 – with a Hallowe'en Special on the last day – watch out for spooky goings on to be announced later.
December sees the return of the Santa Specials which will run for the first two weekends in December (4 and 5 and 11 and 12), and then daily from December 18-24.
Yuletide trains will run from Eastoke Corner to visit Father Christmas' grotto at Santaland (Funland Amusement Park).
And last but not least you can saunter down on New Year's Day 2011 to join the Puddleducks on Parade, when HSR hosts the annual visit of the colourful Citroen 2CVs of the Pompey Puddleducks and Fils de Vitesse classic car clubs.
