From Hayling to Haiti with love

HAYLING musicians, Jenny Frost and Leia Gifford have put together a live acoustic night to raise funds for the Haiti earthquake victims, on Tuesday night.

The pair are staging A Night for Haiti at the Inn on the Beach, on February 9.

Twenty-three-year-old Jenny, who is a singer, told the Islander: "Though thousands of miles away from our small Island community we decided we would like to show our support for such a devastating event.

"It's from one island to another"

The night to be held in the pub's newly-refurbished bar and restaurant will be filled with acoustic musicians playing an array of toe-tapingly good, live music from local island talent and beyond.

The pub's staff will be serving a menu of home-cooked food during the evening and there will also be a raffle with great prizes donated from businesses across Hayling.

Inn on the Beach owner Carole Mackie has pledged to give 10 per cent of the profits from the takings on the night to the appeal.

She said: "Leia works for me at our Chives Bistro in Mengham, and both she and Jenny came to me and asked if they could hold the night at the pub. I was more than happy to say 'yes'.

"Like everyone, they were touched by the TV pictures of the survivors and the rescue efforts, so this is the least we can do.

"We are still arranging for acts to come along and play."

Entry is free but all donations and raffle money will go to the DEC Disasters Emergency Committee - www.dec.org.uk - which distributes their funds to humanitarian charities such as Oxfam, Save the Children and the British Red Cross.

The aid charities are currently working and ensuring survivors get food, clean water, emergency shelter, medical care and any other support they need.

There have been miraculous tales of people being resuced up to two weeks after the devastating quake struck, with the death toll expected to pass the 200,000 mark.

A team of Hampshire firefighters returned to the UK on January 26 after 10 days in the Haiti capital of Port-au-Prince where they managed to rescue three people from collapsed buildings.

The international team of rescuers were co-ordinated from the Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service's headquarters at Eastleigh.

If you would like to offer a prize for the raffle call the Inn on the Beach on 9246 0043. The show will start at 7pm and run until 11pm.
