Former Hayling College Caretaker

JOHN David Smith was born in Portsmouth on June 27, 1926, the eldest of seven children, five girls and two boys.

The family moved to Hayling in 1941. He was called up and joined the Coldstream Guards three years later and served in Palestine after the War.

He married Ann Pycroft in 1950.

He worked for G & R Carrell as a plumber and used to cycle to Horndean or wherever his job took him. John bred and showed rabbits and was a keen photographer.

He helped build two boats and undertook many DIY projects.

John learned to drive in 1967, and became caretaker at Hayling College in 1979, eventually retiring in 1991.

John shared many memorable holidays especially a Nile cruise. A loving family man he leaves a widow Ann, son Robert and daughter Angela, four grandsons and one grand-daughter, three great grandsons and one great grand-daughter. Donations of 336 were raised for The Rowans.
