Fly-tippers brought to book

Hayling Island Community Board By Barry King ENVIRONMENTAL quality ranger Nick Horton reported at our May meeting that there have been numerous cases of "fly tipping" recently, including some asbestos waste.

He said it had been good to see local residents have been key in identifying and catching several culprits.

Congratulations on behalf of the community – we need more residents who want to see justice done.

The proposed Rose in June development has been a hot topic for many months, and the developers gave a presentation outlining the latest proposals to auction the site, and, or the potential redevelopment of 12 new homes.

The site was to be auctioned via "sealed bid" with last date to apply being Friday May 15.

This was a great opportunity for residents and the community to hear first hand and comment on the proposed future actions for the Rose in June site.

EASTOKE CORNER PLAZA

The Liveability Project at Eastoke Corner was discussed, and as already covered in previous months (see chairman Terry Worrall's comments – Hayling Islander, May), there continues to be a need for a clear and specific plan for the proposed investment.

The viewpoint of many is that general improvements such as lighting, fencing, improvements to paths and car park surfaces, bringing the area more in keeping with the Mengham and West Town programmes, is more beneficial than proposals such as the council's proposed "sculpture walk."

As a community we need to make better use of the cash available.

The events held on the Plaza have been extremely successful but the venue requires further investment to make it "socially friendly."

The responses from the community certainly indicate we need to invest in and investigate further expansion of music activities.

By the time the Islander has been published, the Community Board and Hayling Island Churches Together will have joined together for the Praise on the Plaza event on May 31, where we celebrated the official opening by retiring county councilor Ted Gale, with a naming and blessing service.

The next HICB meeting will be on Monday, June 8, at the Bridge Centre, West Town.

This is an important meeting as councillor Mike Fairhurst and borough council officer Tim Slater will be attending with the objective of establishing improved communication with the residents of Hayling.

They will be discussing the future shape and structure of Community Boards.

Havant BC's Julie Boschi will be explaining some of the actions taken regarding the Eastoke Corner development.

All Hayling Island councillors have an open invitation.

The Community Board meets on the second Tuesday of each month, at the Bridge Centre, and any resident who wishes to attend is welcome to voice their opinions.

Why not attend – it's your Island and the Community Board encourages all residents to come, listen and comment.
