Farm forced to ditch milk in freeze
THOUSANDS of litres of milk have had to be poured away because of the freeze.
Articulated lorries were unable to negotiate the icy roads to Northney Farm on St Peter's Road, Hayling Island, so the milk due to be collected was thrown away.
Four thousand litres went to waste, but farmer Tim Pike was hopeful the roads would improve this weekend.
Mr Pike, aged 34, said: "It was two days' worth of milk which is about 4,000 litres. Put simply that means we lose the money - not the collection company.
"We're hoping that they can get through for the next delivery otherwise we'll have to throw that away as well.
"We just have to keep going though - we can't stop milking the cows. The cows are inside at this time of year anyway, so at least they're fine."
Each of the farm's 100 cows drinks dozens of litres each day.
"They drink twice as much water as they produce in milk each day," Mr Pike said. "That amounts up to an awful lot of water.
"It has caused problems but we are just going around and ensuring that the pipes don't freeze."
The famr launched a range of ice cream last summer to combat a surplus in stock.
