Don't leave gas cylinders in beach huts
FIREWATCH Firefighter STEVE ALCHIN reports on another busy month for the retained crews of Hayling Island Fire Station.
First an important warning to anyone who owns a beach hut about the dangers of leaving gas cylinders in the huts
We were called to a beach hut fire at 8pm on July 8. Smoke was coming out of the hut on our arrival.
When we entered, the crew were faced with a rapidly growing fire close to some gas cylinders, which were quickly removed to prevent what could have been a very serious incident.
So please do not leave such cylinders - used with stoves to make drinks and snacks - inside your hut when they are left unattended for any long periods.
Not only can they cause serious danger to fire crews attending any such incidents, but also can cause serious devastation to the huts and surrounding properties.
Please take the cylinders home with you when you leave your hut unattended for long periods of time.
In the past month we have also been called out to fires burning along the Hayling Billy Track. One such incident happened at 5.30pm on 16 July.
When Hayling crews arrived a large section of foreshore had been set alight. We were informed by members of the public that children had started the blaze.
Luckily swift action by a member of the public prevented the fire getting out of control.
Most of these fires are being reported in the early hours of the evening so if you see anything suspicious we would appreciate the public to contact the police.
Also if you see any evidence of a fire or buring then call us – better to be safe then sorry.
Equally, if you have any information about such deliberate acts of criminal damage and arson, then report them to the police, on 0845 0454545, or, if necessary, call Crimstoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
Hayling firefighters were also called out to tackle a blaze in the roof of a flat at Windsor Close on July 12.
Seven appliances – including the turntable ladder from Southsea and a special equipment unit from Cosham – were called with 26 firefighters attending the incident at 4.20pm.
The fire started in the roof of the flat. The crews tackled the blaze and thanks to their hard work and quick response time, managed to stop the fire which was in danger of spreading along the rows of flats.
Thankfully no one was trapped or injured. It is believed the fire started accidently.
Fire Station Open Day
Just a reminder the station's annual open day will be held on Saturday, August 15 from 10am-4pm.
We will have appliances from other stations attending and firefighters will put on displays to show off their skills.

There will be plenty of stalls, including one selling fire engines and firemen figures to raise money for the Firefighter Charity - our Benevolent Fund.
You will also have the chance to dunk a firefighter- plenty of water and a hose will be on hand for that one !
Entry is free and there will be a barbecue and refreshemnts so we would love to see you there.
