Delays ahead as island road shuts for work at night
ONE of the busiest roads in Hayling Island is undergoing resurfacing works which will see it shut overnight.
Hampshire County Council has begun upgrading the road surface of the A3023 Havant Road.
The area from the junction of Victoria Road to Church Road roundabout is having its surface replaced to make it tougher against bad weather.
Work is to be carried out overnight between 8pm and 6am because large machinery needs to be used to carry out the work and the road is too narrow.
The county council’s councillor in charge of transport, Cllr Mel Kendal, said: ‘The work is part of our commitment to improve Hampshire’s roads so they are more resilient to extreme weather and increasing traffic.
‘Hampshire’s road network is vital for our local economy and has to cope with more extreme weather conditions and ever-increasing traffic.
‘We appreciate works of this nature will cause some delay to road users but would ask for your patience and understanding.
‘We are programming the works in order to minimise disruption to all affected parties.’
Work on the island’s road is expected to take up to 25 nights to complete.
The work schedule is dependent on the weather and bad conditions may bring delays.
Overnight working will be done on weekdays, with weekend work being done if need be.
Electronic warning signs will be put up in the area in advance at either end of the road.
Neighbours and people who run businesses nearby have been warned about the work.
When the road is closed at night, people can use alternative routes along either West Lane or Northney Road.
Emergency services, bus companies and holiday sites working on the island will be notified prior to work starting.
Before the resurfacing can start, some drainage and kerb work needs to be carried out.
The date for this work has not yet been set but these minor works will not need the road to be closed.
Traffic will be managed using temporary traffic signals between 7pm and 7am to avoid disruption during the day.
